Olympic gold medalist Cael Sanderson and World champions Dremiel Byers and Clarissa Chun will lead the U.S. wrestling team into the World Championships on Sept. 12-18 in Istanbul, Turkey. The seven-day competition will start with the Greco-Roman tournament, followed by women’s freestyle and men’s freestyle. Sanderson, the head coach at Penn State, returned to the mat after nearly seven years away from competition. He won the World Team Trials less than three months after leading Penn State to the NCAA title. Byers continue to wrestle well. He’s placed third, second and fifth in his last three trips to the World Championships. Chun, a 2008 World champion, is back healthy again after being slowed by injuries the past two years. She looked very strong in winning the U.S. Open and World Team Trials. Two-time World bronze medalist Harry Lester has returned to form after taking last season off. Lester is back down to his old weight class at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and is he will be in the mix to win a title. 2010 World silver medalist Elena Pirozhkova looks poised to contend for another title this year in women’s freestyle. World bronze medalists Justin Ruiz in Greco-Roman and Tervel Dlagnev in freestyle also are scheduled to compete in Turkey. This is the first qualifier for the Olympics. The top six finishers in each weight class qualify their countries for the 2012 Olympics in London.
